Jobs: Part One

So, of course I am in the exact opposite of where I wanted to be after college. Living between my parent’s house and my boyfriend’s apartment, no job, no money…

[Now, I need to preface that I’m planning on moving to Seoul in early 2009 to teach English (and if any one knows of programs or other people who are there now, please let me know), so there is somewhat of a restriction on my job search.]

I didn’t actually start applying for anything until about April or May. Little did I know then that for some inexplicable reason, jobs won’t typically get in touch with you for at least a month after you apply. So by the end of May I had only done twelve job applications.

By the end of June I had done 32. And in the meantime, I’m fine-tuning my resumes and cover letters, etc (and if anyone ever wants to hear more details about that or templates or anything, I am more than happy to share or take advice..). But I still wasn’t getting any offers (at least not any ones that would pay). So eventually I came to the conclusion that I wasn’t getting the jobs I was applying to in New York because I didn’t live there. So, I decided to move there in Augutst and see what happened. But as soon as I had settled into that idea, I got an interview in Georgia - literally a year after I originally applied. After the interview, I changed my mind and decided to stay in town…Only to find out that even though the guy basically offered me the job, I didn’t get it (I’m sorry, does anyone else think that ‘We don’t want you to decide right now, just take some time and get back to us…’ means you can have the job if you want it??). So again, as soon as I rearranged my plans, I had to change them.

Now, by mid-July I was up to about 48 applications/resumes sent. Finally, I was offered two interviews in the city. I went to New York, interviewed, got offered both jobs, but I slowly realized that neither of them paid enough (actually one of them didn’t pay at all…), and that New York was not a pracitical place for me to live. This career search has just been an emotional and geographical tug of war.

That pretty much sums up the first half…hopefully by the time I get to the second part, there will be a happy ending and it will have all been worth it.
